Filler Injections for Restoring Volume in the Mid-Face and Lips

A deflated mid-face, thin lips, and deep creases can be restored using biocompatible dermal fillers, including JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®products. These in-office injections produce exquisite results and require little-to-no downtime.

As with all treatments, Dr. Minoli prefers to use only the safest, tried-and-true injectable therapies. Dr. Minoli believes that facial/lip enhancement and augmentation should be thought of broadly and consider the entire face.

A pretty or handsome lower face has just as much to do with the lips’ relationship to surrounding perioral structures or the lower face’s relationship to the mid-face. Because of this, a combination of injectable treatments may be recommended.

Am I a Candidate for Dermal Fillers?

Mid-Face Enhancement Via Filler Injections

Men and women with progressive sagging and deflation of their cheeks and nasolabial folds (furrows at the junction of cheek and upper lip) are candidates for filler injections, especially thick fillers such as VOLUMA® and Restylane® Lyft.

These quick office-based procedures can often restore a much more youthful attitude to the face.

Lower Face Enhancement With Lip Augmentation and Perioral Restoration

Most patients with signs of aging also have changes around the mouth, including thinning lips and surrounding creases.

You may have lost some substance of your lips over the years, or perhaps, you never had lips quite as full as you would have liked. These are all decent reasons to have lip augmentation, and the results can often add a much more youthful attitude to the face.

How Are Dermal Fillers Performed?

Dr. John Minoli offers various brands of injectable dermal fillers, including BELOTERO BALANCE®, JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, and JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA®.

These fillers are made of hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid is a natural polysaccharide and versatile soft-tissue filler that works by attracting water like a sponge.

HA is widely used to manage wrinkles, fine lines, contour deformities, and volumetric deficiencies of the face, cheeks, and lips. While HA fillers cannot address all concerns, they are safe, predictable, and user-friendly.

Hyaluronic acid filler injections are typically performed in an office setting. For patient comfort, topical ice is usually applied before treatment to reduce needle discomfort. A nerve block may be preferable for some patients.

Injection volume is based on the treated areas and the current volume in the mid-face, lower face, or lips. A combination of dermal fillers is often used to target various concerns and may even be combined with neuromodulators (BOTOX® Cosmetic) for a liquid facelift.

Is There Downtime After Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers require no downtime, and patients can resume normal activities and apply makeup immediately after treatment.

Gently washing the face will help in the early stages after injections. Ice applications can help, though they are not mandatory.

Bruising can occur (and occasionally even last a while), but this is uncommon and eventually subsides.

When Will I See My Dermal Fillers Results, and How Long Will They Last?

Dermal filler injections can last for 6 to 12 months (or more) or more before needing repeated injections.

Ancient arts are the healing arts, and he is a true artist.

Dermal Filler FAQ

Are there risks associated with dermal fillers?

There are very few side effects associated with injectable dermal fillers. The most common include bruising and swelling, which may occur for several days.

Small bumps are infrequently visible or palpable (but these can be treated with antidote injections of hyaluronidase).

Should I consider fat transfer instead of dermal fillers?

Some patients may benefit from a more involved procedure, such as having their own fat injected into their mid-face (autologous fat grafting). This procedure uses donor fat with stem cell potential to add volume to the face or lips. Results can last indefinitely.

Dr. Minoli can help guide you in understanding these aspects of your decision-making.

Are there other lip augmentation options?

Some patients may benefit from the surgical insertion of more substantial solid biologic substances, such as AlloDerm®. Surgical incisions for this procedure are very small and carefully positioned in the deep corner creases of the mouth.

Other patients may require surgical procedures that shorten the length of the upper lip, creating a pouty-lip appearance. Incisions for this procedure are carefully placed along the deep crease at the bottom of the nasal base.

Additionally, some patients may require a surgical advancement of their vermillion ridges. Surgical incisions for this treatment are carefully and crisply placed at the vermillion edges of the lip margins. Thin and/or aging lips can be augmented with natural or biocompatible materials, such as BELOTERO BALANCE®, collagen stimulants, JUVÉDERM®, or Restylane®.
